Sources: Man United two-player signing plan revealed

Man United are still keen to sign a defender and midfielder but cannot strengthen until they sell players, sources have told Football Insider.

The Old Trafford club had hoped West Ham’s moves for Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay would provide them with the requisite funds to complete their summer business.

But those moves have recently broken down, leaving Erik ten Hag unable to add to his squad just days out from the 1 September deadline.

Sofyan Amrabat had been a top target for Ten Hag as he attempts to put his own stamp on the Man United midfield.

However, it is believed that a deal for the Morocco international will not be possible unless McTominay is sold this summer.

A well-placed source has also revealed that Donny van de Beek could also make way to allow United to secure a midfielder signing.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (2 August) that Amrabat’s agents have travelled to Manchester ahead of a proposed move to Man United – with Fiorentina asking for a fee of around £30million.

The Red Devils have already spent big this summer – adding Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund to their ranks.

McTominay, Maguire and Van de Beek were all missing from the starting eleven as Man United beat Wolves in their season opener on Monday (14 August).

The trio managed just 20 combined Premier League starts in the 2022-23 campaign following Ten Hag’s appointment.

United, who will play in the Champions League group stage from next month, face Tottenham in London on Saturday evening (18 August).
