Sources: Man United’s Brian Brobbey signing plan revealed – key exit will pave way to deal

Man United are likely only able to firm up their interest in Ajax star Brian Brobbey in the summer window, sources have told Football Insider.

United are unable to do a deal for the Netherlands international this month without making multiple sales – with Financial Fair Play restrictions taking their toll.

It is believed United boss Erik ten Hag is a “big admirer” of Brobbey, 21, following their time together at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

In turn, Football Insider revealed on Monday (22 January) that the young forward would jump at the chance to join Man United this year amid interest from the Old Trafford club.

Anthony Martial is out of contract in June and is expected to exit the club – and a well-placed source has told Football Insider that his departure could pave the way to a deal for Brobbey.

United will make a big saving on Martial’s wages if the forward is to leave, with the Frenchman reportedly netting £250,000-a-week at present.

Brobbey has managed 15 goals and four assists in 26 games across all competitions this term.

The youngster notched 13 goals and three assists in 32 appearances under Ten Hag while at Ajax.

It is believed a new striker is high on the priority list for Ten Hag, Sir Jim Radcliffe and the United recruitment staff in coming windows.

Rasmus Hojlund was drafted in last summer (2023) but is yet to make a splash in the Premier League, scoring just two top-flight goals in 16 appearances.

An anticipated exit for Martial would leave Hojlund as the only natural senior striker on the books at Old Trafford, with Marcus Rashford clearly more suited to a wide role.
