Sources: Man United’s new ‘top priority’ signing revealed

Man United are still aiming to prioritise the addition of a new midfielder after missing out on strengthening the position in January.

Casemiro‘s imminent departure has only added to their concerns, with depth behind Michael Carrick‘s starting trio already a potential problem at Old Trafford.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Man United‘s recruitment team are planning to move for a new central player.

This comes as the Red Devils have been linked with potential attacking additions, which have been put on the back burner in favour of landing a midfielder.

Football Insider revealed on that Man United are interested in Jean-Philippe Mateta, but will prioritise other additions before making a move.

Man United set to prioritise midfield additions

Football Insider revealed in November that Man United had no plans to spend big in January as they continue to eye high-profile targets.

Instead, they are focusing their resources on the summer window when they hope to address key areas of the team alongside the arrival of a new manager.

Even if Carrick lands the permanent role, the addition of a midfielder is seen as vital given Casemiro is now confirmed to be on his way out.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Whether United have moved on from signing a striker now, that remains to be seen.

“Benjamin Sesko arrived on a big-money deal to be United’s number nine and is starting to find a bit of form under Michael Carrick.

“I don’t think it’s the top priority for Man United to bring in a new striker.

“The midfield, as we constantly talk about, is the main area that the Man United recruitment team will be looking at in the summer transfer window.”

Who is Man United’s top midfield target?

Among a number of midfield targets for Man United including the likes of Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba, Elliott Anderson is seen as the outstanding candidate.

Football Insider revealed on 18 January that Anderson is Man United’s top target and could become available in the summer after a mid-season move was ruled out.

However, they are not alone in their pursuit in the Nottingham Forest star who could cost more than £100million, with Man City also keen on his signature.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 31 January that Crystal Palace are bracing for interest in Wharton and are expecting bids to arrive in the summer window.

He will remain at Selhurst Park for at least another six months before inevitable bids arrive, with Liverpool and Man United the current favourites.
