Sources: Mateu Alemany reaches full agreement to join Aston Villa
Aston Villa have reached a full agreement to hire Barcelona director Mateu Alemany this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Spaniard has spent two years as the director of football at Camp Nou, but he is set to leave the La Liga giants in seven weeks’ time.
Barcelona released a club statement on Tuesday (2 May) confirming that Alemany will leave the club on June 30 – a year before his contract was set to end.
The Spanish outfit confirmed that Alemany contacted Barcelona president Joan Laporta and informed him that he is leaving to pursue “a new professional project”.
It is understood that Villa are now finalising a deal to bring the 60-year-old director to Villa Park in a senior footballing position.
While Alemany is set to join Villa ahead of the 2023/24 season, it will not be until after the summer transfer window following his promise to Barcelona to not leave until the window’s deadline.
Villa are keen to continue their growth under Unai Emery and support him with a director capable of landing his transfer targets.
Alemany was responsible for bringing the likes of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres to Barcelona while dealing with the club’s unstable financial situation.

Club owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris have shown plenty of ambition at Villa Park since purchasing a majority stake in the club in 2018.
Villa spent £87million on new signings this season, bringing in the likes of Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho and Alex Moreno to bolster the squad.
