Sources: Millwall make late move to beat Luton Town to sign Luke Freeman from Sheffield United
Millwall have launched a last-minute move to try and beat Luton Town to the signing of Sheffield United midfielder Luke Freeman, Football Insider understands.
As revealed by this site tonight (31 January), the Hatters made a move for the 29-year-old before the 11pm deadline, with his contract expiring this summer.
A recruitment source has since told Football Insider Millwall are rivalling their Championship rivals to get a last-gasp deal over the line.
Sheffield United are prepared to let Freeman go as he heads into the final months of his contract.
He has struggled for regular game time at Bramall Lane this season and is down the pecking order under Paul Heckingbottom.
Freeman has played just four times in the league for the Blades this term.
Only one those appearances came among the starting XI.
Heckingbottom has given the midfielder the green light to leave, which has led to interest from across the Championship.
Freeman is an experienced campaigner in the second tier, with 190 Championship appearances under his belt.
Luton have space in their squad for midfielders after allowing Glen Rea to join League One outfit Wigan Athletic.
The 27-year-old moved on loan until the end of the season earlier today (31 January).
However, Millwall are also keen to bolster their side and are pushing for a deadline-beating move as well.
The Lions currently sit 15th in the Championship table.

They are three points and five places behind 10th-placed Luton in the standings.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United sit 11th, behind the Hatters on goal difference alone.
In other news, Sheffield United were been tipped to complete two new signings after a ‘ridiculous development’.
