Newcastle are in advanced talks to sign Islam Slimani on loan from Leicester City as a replacement for Aleksandar Mitrovic, Football Insider understands.
Newcastle have softened their stance on Mitrovic and are ready to consider loaning him out after initially preferring only permanent deals for the Serbian.
Anderlecht and Bordeaux are keen to sign Mitrovic on loan with views to permanent deals and Newcastle are ready to let him move before the transfer window closes on Wednesday night.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the north-east giants are thrashing out a deal for Slimani on what would be a loan that runs until the end of the season.
Newcastle are increasingly confident of winning the race ahead of West Ham for Slimani as the likelihood grows that Mitrovic will leave St James’ Park.
Slimani is well down the pecking order at the King Power Stadium and the Algerian is open to move away on loan.
Leicester would prefer to sell Slimani on a permanent basis, but could consider a loan deal the closer it gets to the end of the deadline.
Slimani has a brilliant track record for Algeria, for whom he has scored 26 goals in 55 appearances, and ex-club Sporting Lisbon, where he netted 57 times in 111 matches.
