Sources: Newcastle could look to replace ‘huge fans favourite’ in January

Newcastle United have endured a dismal start to the Premier League season so far despite impressing in their Champions League campgain.

Eddie Howe’s side lost 3-1 to Brentford last time out, despite having been 1-0 up at half-time, leading to growing concerns about their performances.

The Magpies have won just three of their 11 Premier League games this season and have dropped to 14th place, while they are winless on the road since April.

Howe is worried about Newcastle’s away form amid building pressure to get results, but it is not just the manager who is being questioned due to the difficult run.

As a result of their dismal Premier League performances, speculation is growing about a number of under-performing players and their futures at the club.

Joelinton could be replaced by Newcastle United

One player who has caused plenty of frustration so far this season is Joelinton, who has failed to live up to expectations during this poor run of form.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Magpies are assessing long-term improvements for the midfielder as they aim to improve their squad and continue making steps towards their ambitious plans.

Football Insider revealed on 8 November that Newcastle have no plans to sell Joelinton, but his form is becoming a concern with alternatives now in mind.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “There’s no doubting that Joelinton’s not been at his best so far this season, he’s struggled for form and fitness.

“I still think he’s a key man for Eddie Howe’s side. He’s built a really strong partnership with Guimaraes and Tonali, and he offers something different to both of those.

“He’s such a huge fans’ favourite up at St James’ Park as well.

“So I don’t think they’ll be rushing in to make any decisions on Joelinton and his long-term future, I still think he’s got a key role to play for them.

“But look, all top clubs will be obviously looking at players and seeing when they’re going to improve in their side.

“That includes Newcastle, and if any of the players including Joelinton aren’t living up to expectations, then they might look at possible replacements.”

However, while the Brazilian’s form has been a concern for Newcastle, they are hopeful he will soon get back to his best as part of their formidable midfield trio.

Newcastle assessing midfield options ahead of January window

A new midfielder has been on the Magpies radar as they aim to bolster their midfield, leading to further speculation about Joelinton’s future.

Jacob Ramsey arrived at St James’ Park during the summer, and replaced the Brazilian against Brentford, and while Joelinton is not expected to leave, he could soon drop out of the XI.

Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali signed a new contract, while Newcastle are planning talks with Bruno Guimaraes, as they aim to sure up their midfield options.

Football Insider revealed on 12 October that Newcastle are interested in re-signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and are keeping tabs on his displays.

Newcastle are also eyeing Kobbie Mainoo amid ongoing speculation about his future at Man United, with midfield reinforcements on their agenda.
