Sources: Newcastle in talks to renew ‘top-class’ star’s contract, it’s not Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle are looking to hold contract talks with Fabian Schar with the defender’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

The Switzerland international is in his eighth season on Tyneside, yet there have been no developments on a new deal.

Over the summer, Newcastle brought in Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, suggesting Eddie Howe does not see Schar as part of his long-term thinking.

Similarly, sources told Football Insider that Newcastle are in the race to sign Joel Ordonez, as they look to replace the 33-year-old with a younger defensive prodigy.

Fabian Schar one of several defensive servants out of contract next summer

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the former Basel man is one of three Toon defenders out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Both Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth are set to leave the club in June 2026, which is highly likely to happen given their lack of game time of late.

For Schar, Howe has previously praised him as “top-class” (BBC Sport, 29 October), indicating that perhaps a new deal is in the offing in the coming months.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast over the Swiss’ situation and their pursuit of Ordonez, I explained: “Newcastle, long-term, are probably going to have to be looking at defensive reinforcements.

“Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, both 33 now, Schar himself is out of contract in the summer. I’m sure talks are going on over a new deal.

“Then one of the other centre backs in the squad, Jamaal Lascelles, he’s also out of contract in 2026.

“I think heading into next season, Newcastle probably will need reinforcements in that back line and probably that’s why they’re looking at players like Ordonez.”

Tino Livramento also on list of defensive contract extensions for Newcastle

Continuing the trend of Magpies defenders being lined up for new deals, Howe is keen to ensure his backline is ready for the future.

Sources told Football Insider on 14 September that Newcastle plan to offer Livramento a new contract to extend his stay on Tyneside.

The 22-year-old is currently out with injury but has impressed since joining the club in August 2023.

With his contract expiring in June 2028 and interest set to heat up from other Premier League giants, the Toon must agree a contract extension with the Englishman.
