Sources: Newcastle United advance on talks to sign Anthony Gordon but wary of Chelsea

Anthony Gordon has told Everton he wants to leave the club before the January window shuts amid interest from Newcastle United, sources have told Football Insider.

The winger, 21, is in talks to join Newcastle United in a £30million-plus deal but there is also strong interest in him from Chelsea.

Everton are increasingly likely to sell Gordon by next Tuesday’s cut-off after fending off interest in him last summer.

Gordon is believed to have told friends he is “very keen” on signing for Newcastle, sources say, and has not trained with Everton while the two clubs discuss a deal.

Gordon was on Newcastle’s radar last summer and Everton knocked back a £35m offer from the north-east giants in July.

Chelsea also pushed hard for Gordon and suggested multiple formulas, including players as part of a swap deal, before talks ground to a halt.

At that point, Everton were confident of securing a £70m-plus fee for the forward but his valuation has dropped this season during what has been a difficult campaign for player and club.

Newcastle are increasingly confident of agreeing a deal with Everton but are wary of Chelsea’s interest.

His potential exit would generate funds for the crisis-hit Merseysiders, whose loan deal for Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma was hijacked by Tottenham.

Gordon has scored three goals in 16 Premier League outings this season with 12 of those appearances coming from the start.

Newcastle United are next in action against Southampton in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday (31 January).
