Sources: Newcastle United agree Lorius Karius signing as ex-Man United star rejects their offer

Newcastle United have agreed to sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius after Ben Foster rejected their offer, sources have told Football Insider.

Karius, 29, is completing a Newcastle medical and will sign a short-term deal that runs until January.

He is a free agent after his Liverpool contract ended in the summer.

Newcastle have turned to Karius after failing to lure former Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster, who has also been a free agent since leaving the club in June.

But the 39-year-old rejected Newcastle’s offer of a short-term deal.

Foster, who has made 390 appearances in the top flight, conceded 49 goals in 26 Premier League games last term as Watford were relegated.

Karius last turned out on loan at Bundesliga side Mainz, making five appearances across all competitions during the 2020-21 campaign.

He returned to Liverpool for the 2021-22 season but failed to appear for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Karius conceded 47 goals in 49 appearances for the Reds but will be best remembered for two high-profile gaffes which proved the difference in the 2018 Champions League final.

The former Germany Under-21 international was loaned out to Besiktas in the immediate aftermath of that game but is yet to regain his best form.

Newcastle are in the market for a back-up shot-stopper after losing former first-choice star Martin Dubravka to Man United earlier this summer.

Nick Pope playing for Newcastle

Eddie Howe’s side moved for England international Nick Pope during the main window after Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.

The Magpies sit 11th in the Premier League and are yet to taste defeat this term.
