Sources: Newcastle United in Lloyd Kelly transfer mission as new bid details revealed

Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on Bournemouth star Lloyd Kelly as they line up a summer bid, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed on 8 February that United were laying the groundwork to sign the centre-back, 23, despite recruiting three defenders in January.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the club are sending scouts to watch all of Kelly’s matches as they closely monitor his development.

This includes in last weekend’s 3-0 Championship win over Huddersfield, when he partnered Liverpool loanee Nathaniel Phillips at the back.

The super-rich north-east outfit were planning to make a move for Kelly this summer regardless of whether they stayed up or not.

But the fear of relegation has eased in recent weeks following a series of Premier League wins.

Newcastle are now stepping up their interest after Bournemouth refused to sell Eddie Howe’s former signing in January.

Kelly has been described as a ‘Rolls-Royce‘ by former Newcastle defender Jonathan Woodgate, who worked with him during his time as interim Bournemouth boss.

Former Bristol City manager Lee Johnson told the Bristol Post his high hopes of a player he claims “looks an absolute beast.”

Newcastle identified the defender as someone they believe can make the transition from Championship to Premier League football.

However, Bournemouth refused to sell during the January window as they look for a return to the top flight.

The Magpies’ talent spotters have kept watching Kelly and have returned positive feedback from their scouting missions.

Newcastle United

Newcastle are now readying a summer bid as they look to continue bolstering their backline.

Howe signed Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Matt Targett in January, the latter of the trio on loan.
