Sources: Newcastle United plan to sign Inacio for well below release clause

Newcastle United hope to land centre-back target Goncalo Inacio for a cut-price fee, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (3 July) that Newcastle are exploring a potential summer move for the 21-year-old – who “fits the profile” at St James’ Park.

It is believed Inacio has a release clause in his Sporting CP contract worth €60million (£51.5million).

However, Newcastle hope to land him for below that figure – despite their strong financial situation under the Saudi-backed ownership.

The Magpies feel Inacio is a strong long-term investment for the club.

He is one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in world football and has been widely linked with a move to the Premier League this summer.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is keen to bolster his side with the added rigours of Champions League football on the horizon in the 2023-24 campaign.

Portugal international Inacio racked up 52 appearances across all competitions last term, notching four goals and three assists.

The left-footer can play on either side of a two-man defensive partnership – as well as at full-back.

He signed a fresh four-year contract last year (2022), keeping the left footer at Sporting until June 2026 and introducing his big-money release clause.

Inacio has already managed 122 career appearances despite his tender age – and has experience in the Champions League.

Newcastle have already wrapped up one big-money deal this summer – with the Magpies announcing the arrival of AC Milan and Italy star Sandro Tonali on Monday (3 July).

Howe’s side are yet to return to pre-season training ahead of their first friendly against Gateshead on 15 July.
