Sources: Newcastle United ready to open talks over Dan Burn deal

Newcastle United are ready to offer defender Dan Burn a new St James’ Park contract, sources have told Football Insider.

The 30-year-old has less than 18 months remaining on his current deal after signing a two-and-a-half-year agreement with the Magpies when he joined from Brighton last January (2022).

It is believed that manager Eddie Howe wants to keep Burn at the club as he values his versatility and passion for his boyhood club.

Kieran Trippier recently (27 January) signed a new contract until June 2025 after a stellar first year at Newcastle.

It is understood that tying Burn down is now next on the agenda following his impressive form this season.

The 6ft 6in defender has started all but one game in the Premier League this season and has been a regular feature in the Magpies’ run to the League Cup final.

Burn has played almost 2300 minutes of first-team action so far this term – most of which have come in a left-back berth.

The boyhood Newcastle fan has proven good value since arriving from Brighton in a reported £13million deal in January 2022.

He has frozen out summer signing Matt Targett – who has been consigned to a backup role despite arriving from Aston Villa for a reported £15million last summer (2022).

Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett are the other left-back options at the club but both have rarely featured this season ahead of probable summer exits.

Newcastle can secure European qualification next week (26 February) by beating Man United in the League Cup final at Wembley.

A cup win would ensure the Magpies play in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds – but Howe will have his eye on achieving a top-four Premier League finish.

The north-east giants are fourth in the table – two points clear of Tottenham.
