Sources: Newcastle United to open talks over Fabian Schar deal
Newcastle United are keen to discuss a new contract with Fabian Schar in the off-season, sources have told Football Insider.
The 31-year-old’s current Magpies deal is set to expire in June 2024, meaning he can discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides next January.
It is believed Newcastle are keen to protect Schar’s transfer value as well as reward his performances by handing him renewed terms.
The Switzerland international is just one of several Newcastle stars to be transformed since the appointment of Eddie Howe in November 2021.
Joelinton, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron are among those to thrive under Howe’s stewardship despite the big-money revolution on Tyneside.
Schar partnered 2022 signing Sven Botman in the 2022-23 campaign as Newcastle returned to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
The former Deportivo La Coruna star was a virtual ever-present in Howe’s defence – starting 36 of a possible 38 Premier League games.
Schar’s last extension at Newcastle came just last year (2022) – when he signed a two-year deal.
The 75-cap Switzerland star earns a reported wage of £40,000-a-week at the club.
Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn are the only other recognised centre-backs on the books at Newcastle.

The Magpies’ Champions League adventure will get underway in the group stages in September – with fourth-placed finishers no longer needing to qualify for the competition.
The Saudi-backed outfit are expected to spend healthily again in the summer window after a reported transfer outlay of £160million in the 2022-23 campaign.
