Sources: Northampton Town in advanced talks to sign Peterborough star Kanu

Peterborough United attacking midfielder Idris Kanu is in advanced talks to join Northampton Town on loan, Football Insider understands.

The 22-year-old, who has been away with Sierra Leone at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, is well down the pecking order at London Road.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Northampton have moved to agree a deal to sign Kanu to boost their League Two promotion bid.

They are confident of fending off competition from EFL rivals to reach a full agreement.

Kanu has 18 months left on his contract at London Road after he put pen to paper on an extension in 2020.

The former West Ham youngster has made just six appearances across all competitions this season for the Posh.

He has started just once – a 3-0 defeat to Swansea in October.

Peterborough signed the midfielder in 2017 and he has made 69 appearances in total for the club.

However, the former Port Vale and Boreham Wood loanee has failed to nail down a first-team spot after promotion to the Championship last season.

Football Insider revealed last month (6 December) that Kanu is ready to leave in search of regular first-team football with MK Dons, Salford, and Colchester all chasing his signature.

But League Two high-flyers Northampton now look to have jumped the queue as the 31 January deadline approaches.

The Cobblers are just two points away from the automatic promotion spots.

Kanu could become Northampton’s third loan signing in this window after Tyler Magloire and Chanka Zimba arrived earlier this month.
