Sources: Oldham Athletic and Hartlepool battle for Rangers forward McPake after transfer decision made

Rangers are set to recall Josh McPake and loan him out to a new English club in January, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Oldham and Hartlepool are plotting moves for the Scotland Under-21 international in the upcoming window.

A Rangers source has told Football Insider that the plan is to terminate McPake’s season-long loan at English League One outfit Morecambe and loan him to a new club for him in the second half of the campaign.

The Glasgow giants are keen to find a new a team for the 20-year-old where he is playing regularly and getting the opportunity to develop his game.

Rangers have high hopes for McPake and demonstrated that by securing him to a new three-year contract during the summer.

That ties him to Ibrox until 2024 and provides a platform for him to establish himself at the club.

He has found starts hard to come by at Morecambe although that is partly due to injury.

McPake has been sidelined since mid-October with an ankle problem.

He has made three starts for third-tier Morecambe among six appearances in all competitions.

McPake, who has made just one senior appearance for Rangers, is a versatile attacker who operates anywhere across the front line but mainly on the right flank.

He made a big impression on loan at English League Two club Harrogate in the second half of last season.

McPake’s 22 starts yielded an impressive four goals after he spent the first half of 2020-21 at Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton.
