Sources: Paul Cook set to be named new Chesterfield manager today

Paul Cook is set to be named the new Chesterfield manager later today (10 February), Football Insider understands.

The National League promotion hopefuls have been in the hunt for a new head coach following James Rowe’s departure last week (4 February).

A Chesterfield source has told Football Insider the club have now agreed terms with Cook, 54, to take charge for a second time.

The former Portsmouth boss has been out of work since leaving Ipswich Town in December 2021.

Chesterfield have moved quickly to reappoint Cook as they continue to push for promotion to the Football League.

It is understood all parties have come to an agreement over a return to the Technique Stadium and an announcement is imminent.

Cook spent two-and-a-half years as Chesterfield boss, having been appointed in October 2012 with the club in League Two.

He finished eighth in the 2012/13 campaign before leading the Spireites to the title and promotion in his first full season at the club.

The ex-Wolves star then led Chesterfield to the League One play-offs, losing to Preston North End in the semi-finals.

Cook left the Derbyshire outfit at the end of the 2014/15 campaign to drop back into League Two with Portsmouth.

He took Pompey to the play-offs in his first campaign before winning another League Two title the following season.

Following spells at Wigan and Ipswich, Cook is now set to return to Chesterfield.

The Spireites currently sit second in the National League, one point behind Stockport with a game in hand.

Cook’s first game in charge looks set to be Saturday’s visit to Weymouth.
