Sources: Portsmouth agree to sign Luton Town star Matt Macey

Portsmouth have agreed a deal to sign Luton Town goalkeeper Matt Macey on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

All parties have agreed on a loan move for the 28-year-old until the end of the season, with the deal expected to be finalised soon.

The former Arsenal youth product has been linked with a move to Scotland after interest was shown by both Aberdeen and Dundee United.

But it is understood that Portsmouth have won the race for Macey’s signature.

Macey has struggled for first-team action at Luton this season, with his sole appearance for the club coming in an EFL Cup clash against Newport County in August.

The experienced goalkeeper began his youth career at Bristol Rovers but was then snapped up by Arsenal’s academy in 2013.

Just a year later, Macey was promoted to the senior squad at Arsenal, where he spent the next seven years despite never making a senior appearance for the Gunners.

He enjoyed three separate loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Luton and Plymouth during his time in north London.

Macey also picked up an FA Cup medal in 2020 in remarkable fashion, after Mikel Arteta named him in the matchday squad at Wembley when Arsenal beat London rivals Chelsea.

With opportunities hard to come by at the Emirates Stadium, Macey made a permanent move to Hibernian in 2021 and became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

But his time in Scotland was short-lived, with Macey moving back to England in June 2022 when he completed a transfer to Luton for an undisclosed fee.
