Sources: Rangers decide to let £15,000-a-week star go as Filip Helander decision made

Rangers are about to begin a big recruitment push in what will be a huge summer at the club as Michael Beale builds his team for the future.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Filip Helander is one of the casualties of that change as the 29-year-old will leave when his contract expires in the summer.

Rangers signed Helander for £3million in 2019, and he went on to be a key figure in the team that won the club’s 55th title under Steven Gerrard.

However, his time in Glasgow has been blighted by injury that has kept him out for long periods.

He has played 60 times for Rangers but has missed 110 games with a persistent foot injury and knee surgery, which has raised internal questions as to whether he is worth his wage.

Sources have said that Rangers now believe that the £15,000-a-week outlay is better spent on new additions and the club are working hard behind the scenes to bring in fresh faces.

Helander will not be the last player senior to leave the club in the coming months. James Sands has already had his loan cut and sent back to New York.

It is also expected that several first-team players could see their time at Ibrox end when their contracts expire at the end of the season.

Ross Wilson and Michael Beale will try to strengthen in almost every position this summer as the club try to chase treble-chasing Celtic down next season.

The clubs’ recruitment drive is already in full swing and Rangers are set to be the busiest club in Scotland come summer, targeting players from around Europe and in the UK.

There are multiple targets on the table and there will be a rotating door as the Glasgow giants free up room on their wage bill,
