Sources: Rangers make surprise move to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Rangers have made a surprise move for Coventry City goal machine Victor Gyokeres, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the Ibrox giants have enquired about the cost of signing the 22-goal forward in the summer window.

Gyokeres, 24, is valued at £20million by Coventry – which is nearly double the club-record £12million fee paid by Rangers for Tore Andre Flo in 2000.

The Gers’ swoop is a surprise given the high level of Premier League interest in the Sweden international.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (4 May) that Leeds, Everton, Fulham and Burnley are interested in Gyokeres’ services – but it is Wolves who are “pushing the hardest” to do a summer deal.

Rangers boss Michael Beale is a “huge” fan of Gyokeres following his scoring exploits in the Championship this season.

Beale’s priority is to sign a top-class number nine who can hit the ground running in the Gers’ fight to wrest back the Scottish Premiership title from Celtic next season.

The former QPR boss appeared to confirm summer exits for Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent in his press conference on Friday (5 May), revealing that the Gers have not offered the out-of-contract pair new terms.

The pair have combined for 15 goals across all competitions this season and will leave a void in the Rangers attack.

Sources with knowledge of Gyokeres’ situation have revealed that Coventry are resigned to losing their prize asset if they cannot achieve promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Sky Blues currently occupy a play-off berth ahead of the final day of the Championship on Monday (8 May).

Gyokeres, who has scored 21 goals in 45 second-tier appearances this term, is out of contract in June 2024.
