Sources: Rangers plot cut-price move to sign player with ‘huge potential’

Rangers are plotting a move to sign Kilmarnock midfielder David Watson on a cut-price deal ahead of the January transfer window.

Watson, 20, is out of contract at the end of the season and Rangers are the latest side to express an interest in prising him away from Rugby Park before his deal ends.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Rangers see the midfielder as somebody with huge potential, who could come into Danny Rohl‘s side and hit the ground running thanks to his experience despite his young age.

A number of rival clubs, including Celtic and English Championship sides, are expected to rival Rangers’ pursuit but Rohl’s team have been long-term admirers.

It would be seen as a major coup for the Ibrox club if they were able to land Watson in January, and work is ongoing behind the scenes to assess the possibility.

Rangers plot move to sign David Watson in January

Football Insider revealed on 28 October that Rangers want three new players in January, with a new midfielder firmly on their list of targets.

Watson’s potential availability given his contract situation at Kilmarnock could open the door for Rangers to swoop in with a cut-price offer.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “Yeah, it’s a potential move that could happen for Rangers, as you said.

“The contract situation at Kilmarnock for Watson opens the door maybe for Rangers to land the player for a cut price fee in the new year.

“Obviously Rangers have been keeping tabs on Watson for a while now, so he’s a player who could come in and hit the ground running for Rangers.

“He’s obviously proven in the Scottish Premier League as well.

“He’s a player with huge potential and if Rangers could land him for a cup price fee in January could be a real smart pick up by Danny Rohl’s side.

“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of interest from elsewhere in Scotland and probably also in the English Championship.

“So I think it could be a smart move by Rangers to try and get a deal tied up early for the midfielder who would add a bit of dynamism into their midfield.”

Nicolas Raskin update emerges at Rangers

Alongside the speculation surrounding potential midfield additions, whispers about Nicolas Raskin’s future at Ibrox is refusing to die down.

Football Insider revealed on 16 November that Rangers are expecting offers for Raskin to arrive in January given the level of interest in his signature.

Rangers are preparing to receive offers for the midfield in the January window despite having no plans to let him go, and plan to increase his price tag again.

Football Insider revealed in September that Raskin is more likely to stay at Rangers beyond the January window following his return to the side.

However, with just over 18 months remaining on his deal, there is a growing feeling that the club will be forced to accept offers next summer if he does not agree new terms.
