Reading have hijacked their Championship rivals to make a move to sign midfielder Charlie Adam on a free transfer, Football Insider understands.
Former Rangers and Liverpool man Adam, 33, is a free agent after leaving Stoke City at the end of June when his contract expired.
Adam has been training with Blackburn during pre-season as he looks to win a deal at Ewood Park, while former club Blackpool have also been linked with a move to bring the midfielder back to Bloomfield Road.
A Reading source has told Football Insider that the club are ready to offer Adam the chance to stay in the Championship next season.
Manager Jose Gomes believes the Scot fits the bill for his side as he is proven in the Premier League and Championship, has genuine pedigree and is available on a free transfer.
Reading are now well placed to sign Adam if they can agree personal terms with him over the coming days.
The Royals have only made one signing so far this summer in the shape of former Birmingham City defender Michael Morrison on a free transfer.
Reading are operating under a ‘soft’ transfer embargo after financial difficulties, and are currently only able to sign free agents.
