Sources: Ross County agree deal to sign Josh Stones
Ross County have agreed a loan deal to sign Wigan Athletic forward Josh Stones for the remainder of the season, sources have told Football Insider.
The Scottish Premiership side are applying the finishing touches to the deal having beaten several other English and Scottish clubs to the 19-year-old’s signature.
Stones attracted Wigan’s attention during his time with non-league club Guiseley, where he rose through the ranks of their youth teams.
The teenage striker impressed in Guiseley’s Under-19s setup and then made his breakthrough to the senior team in 2021.
Stones made 22 senior appearances for Guiseley, scoring once in his breakthrough season.
His bright performances attracted Wigan, who signed him for their academy side in the summer.
Stones made a brilliant start to his Wigan career, scoring twice on his Under-21s debut in a 5-0 win over Watford.
Following the match, Stones revealed that he “settled in perfectly” following his move from Guiseley.
But first-team opportunities proved to be limited for the youngster, with Kolo Toure still yet to include Stones in a matchday squad since taking over Wigan in November 2022.
His only game time this season came in the League Cup when he made a one-minute cameo off the bench during the 1-0 loss to Fleetwood that saw Wigan exit the tournament.
Ashley Fletcher and Will Keane remain Toure’s favoured strike partnership at the DW Stadium, leaving Stones’ best chance of first-team minutes with Ross County.
