Sources: Schumacher set to be appointed Plymouth Argyle manager as Lowe heads to Preston

Steven Schumacher is set to be appointed the new Plymouth Argyle manager, Football Insider has learned.

This site revealed earlier today that Ryan Lowe is quitting to take over at Championship outfit Preston North End.

An Argyle source has told Football Insider that Schumacher is expected to replace Lowe as manager rather than follow him to Preston.

Schumacher, 37, had been assistant manager at Plymouth and worked alongside Lowe at Bury before joining him in Devon.

The pair secured promotion to League One with Argyle in the 2019-20 season.

They then consolidated the club’s third-tier status with an 18th place finish last term.

Schumacher and Lowe also achieved promotion from League Two a season earlier with Bury, before the club were wound-up.

This season, the duo’s contributions have seen Plymouth fly high atop the third tier.

Schumacher is now looking to forge his own path in management after a successful playing career spanning 16 years and 446 senior appearances.

However, the Home Park job will not be the former Everton midfielder’s first taste of senior management.

The 37-year-old took charge of non-league side Southport on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Alan Lewer in 2017.

Schumacher now faces the task of getting Plymouth’s promotion push back on track after slipping to three consecutive league defeats.

The Devon side travel to fellow promotion chasers MK Dons tomorrow in what could be the former Bury midfielder’s first game in charge.

In other news, Ryan Lowe has agreed to become Preston manager after departing Plymouth.
