Sources: Serie A club submit bid for Luton Town star Ed McJannet

Serie A side Sassuolo have submitted a bid for Luton Town sensation Ed McJannet, sources have told Football Insider.

The 19-year-old has earned rave reviews from scouts of the Italian club and they have responded with a formal offer in an attempt to secure a late-window deal.

McJannet is highly rated at Kenilworth Road but has yet to make his first-team debut for Luton.

There has been a growing trend of Italian clubs signing top young Irish talent and McJannet is the latest player to attract interest from Serie A.

Full-back John Ryan, formerly of Shamrock Rovers and UCD, is already on the books at Sassuolo.

Festy Ebosele, Cathal Heffernan, James Abankwah, and Kevin Zefi are all also currently plying their trade in the Italian top flight to differing degrees of success.

McJannet, who turned 19 last week (25 January), signed his first professional deal two years ago but is yet to make his first-team at Kenilworth Road.

He was named in two senior squads in cup matches last season but failed to appear from the bench against Cambridge or Stevenage.

McJannet has been training with Rob Edwards’ first team in recent weeks after returning from a lengthy injury layoff.

He is an established member of the Republic of Ireland Under-19 side and wore the captain’s armband as they beat Hungary Under-19’s in September 2022.

Luton sit seventh in the Championship as they chase back-to-back play-off finishes.

The Hatters have been active in the January transfer market, tying up the loan arrival of Leeds right-back Cody Drameh.

Meanwhile, Sassuolo sit 16th in Serie A following their 5-2 demolition of AC Milan on Sunday (29 January).
