Sources: Sheffield Wednesday in advanced talks to agree Palmer deal

Sheffield Wednesday are in advanced talks with Liam Palmer over a new contract, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 30-year-old’s current deal expires next summer to throw his long-term future into doubt.

A Wednesday source has told Football Insider that the club are working to tie Palmer to a new long-term contract.

It is hoped an agreement for the Scotland international can be formalised shortly.

Palmer remains an important player for the Owls and has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season.

Impressively, he has also played every minute of league football with Wednesday unbeaten in four.

He stuck with the club after their relegation from the Championship last season having spent all but one year of his career away from Hillsborough.

That came in the 2012-13 season as he joined Tranmere Rovers on loan.

Palmer joined Wednesday aged seven and has so far made 316 appearances for the club across an 11-year senior career.

The defender can play all across the backline and has played at right-back, left-back and centre-back in League One this season.

Wednesday are in decent form and sit ninth in the third-tier as they look to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

As well as an impressive career with Sheffield Wednesday, Palmer has eight Scotland caps to his name.

His last international outing came in March as he came off the bench when Scotland beat the Faroe Islands 4-0.
