EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke
Sheffield Wednesday are plotting a last-gasp move to sign Bristol City winger Callum O’Dowda, Football Insider understands.
O’Dowda, who made 35 appearances for Bristol City last season, is stalling over a new contact at Ashton Gate, with his current deal set to expire next year.
A Wednesday source has told Football Insider they are readying a deadline-day swoop for the 24-year-old after learning the Robins are still willing to let him leave.
Leeds United have also held a strong interest in O’Dowda this year and held talks about signing him initially in the January transfer window.
It remains to be seen if Leeds decide to rival their Yorkshire neighbours for the wide forward today even if they fail in their bid to prise Ryan Kent from Liverpool.
Fulham were on the verge of signing O’Dowda last month but baulked at Bristol City’s £8million asking price for the player they signed from Oxford United.
O’Dowda scored five goals and assisted five more for Bristol City last season as they just missed out on a play-off place.
He has made 103 appearances for Lee Johnson’s side and also been capped 15 times by the Republic of Ireland.
In other Leeds United news, the club are set to make two statement signings today, according to a BBC pundit.
