Sources: Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City plot moves for Anthony Glennon

Sunderland, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday are plotting moves for Grimsby Town defender Anthony Glennon, sources have told Football insider.

The left-back, 22, has been Grimsby’s standout performer since his arrival from Burnley and his performances have put leading EFL clubs on high alert.

Sunderland, Hull and Sheffield Wednesday have been making regular checks on the former Liverpool youngster ahead of the January window.

The attacking left-back has provided four assists and scored one goal in 15 games this season.

Gleeson previously enjoyed a loan spell at Blundell Park in the 2019-20 season before moving to Grimsby permanently in the summer to sign a two-year contract.

The Mariners are mid-table in League Two and Gleeson has established himself as Paul Hurst’s first-choice left-back.

As well as his spells at Grimsby, he also spent time on loan at Barrow in the second half of the 2021-22 campaign.

He has now racked up 40 appearances in League Two, chipping in with two goals and five assists.

Sheffield Wednesday are flying high towards the top end of League One but both of their senior left-backs, Reece James and Jaden Brown, are out of contract at the end of the season.

The Owls will be hoping to join Hull City and Sunderland in the Championship next term.

Hull City are down in 20th in the table but first-choice left-back Callum Elder is out of contract next summer (2023).

Sunderland’s first-choice left-back Dennis Cirkin was linked with a move back to Tottenham last month.
