Sources: Tottenham and Newcastle in race to sign Southampton star Mohammed Salisu

Tottenham and Newcastle are among the clubs plotting a potential summer move for Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu, sources have told Football Insider.

Sources with knowledge of the 23-year-old’s situation have revealed that other Premier League sides are also considering a bid for the centre-back.

Salisu has less than 18 months remaining on his Southampton contract and no talks have yet been held over a renewal at St Mary’s Stadium.

Both Tottenham and Newcastle are looking to sign a left-sided centre-back in the summer window.

Salisu has been a regular starter for Southampton this season, making 27 appearances across all competitions.

He joined the south coast club from Real Valladolid for a reported fee of almost £11million in 2020 after making 31 La Liga appearances in the 2019-20 campaign.

The centre-back had to wait six months for his Southampton debut but has gone on to turn out 67 times for the Saints in the Premier League.

Salisu got his first Ghana call-up in the build-up to the World Cup and turned out three times for the Black Stars in Qatar, scoring once.

Tottenham loanee Clement Lenglet is set to return to parent club Barcelona at the end of the season after failing to nail down a starting berth.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (6 March) that Spurs are also monitoring the situation of Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse ahead of a potential summer move.

Meanwhile, this site revealed last month (17 February) that Newcastle want to sign a long-term partner for Sven Botman during the off-season despite Fabian Schar’s impressive form.

Both clubs are in the hunt for Champions League qualification with just over two months left in the 2022-23 campaign.
