Sources: Tottenham set sights on Everton star James Garner – he ‘ticks a lot of boxes’

Tottenham and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Everton star James Garner ahead of a potential summer swoop, sources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old has been impressive for the struggling Toffees so far in the 2023-24 campaign.

A well-placed source has now told Football Insider that Garner “ticks a lot of boxes” for Tottenham and Newcastle with the summer window now approaching.

Sources say both sides are keen to add midfield reinforcements and are eyeing players under the age of 24 with the potential to play at Champions League level.

Garner would prove a versatile option for either club as he can play in a range of midfield roles.

Tottenham and Newcastle want Garner – Everton star ‘ticks a lot of boxes’

The England Under-21 star has played on both flanks, in holding midfield and in a box-to-box role for Everton this season.

It is believed Sean Dyche’s side will face a real battle to keep Garner in the summer window – especially if they suffer relegation to the Championship.

He has made 22 Premier League starts among 30 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign, notching two goals and one assist.

Indeed, only James Tarkowski (2715) has more minutes for Everton this season, with Garner (2598) ahead even of Jordan Pickford (2520).

The midfielder joined Everton from Man United in 2022 for a reported £15million.

Garner, who was born in Birkenhead, is under contract with the Toffees until June 2026.

The ex-Nottingham Forest and Watford loanee has made 47 appearances in total for the Merseysiders since his arrival.

Newcastle previously dealt with Everton last January (2023) – bringing winger Anthony Gordon to St James’ Park for a reported £45million.

Dyche’s side sit inside the relegation zone after 24 games following their 10-point deduction earlier this season.
