Sources: Tottenham to open talks over long-term Son Heung-min deal

Tottenham are ready to open talks with Son Heung-min over a potential new deal at the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Son, 31, is now regarded as the main man at Spurs following Harry Kane’s exit and was named club captain earlier this summer.

Tottenham want to reflect the forward’s importance to Ange Postecoglou’s side by handing him a new deal.

It is believed they will first activate the one-year extension clause in his current deal – prolonging that contract until June 2026.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Spurs could yet open talks with Son about a completely fresh long-term deal.

They plan to open talks to that effect in the near future.

The South Korea international currently earns a reported wage of £190,000-a-week in North London.

He has started the 2023-24 campaign with three goals in six appearances across all competitions.

Son has started in a central-forward role in the last two Premier League games, and notched a hat-trick against promoted Burnley earlier this month (2 September).

The 31-year-old endured a below-par season last term – managing 14 goals and six assists in all competitions as Tottenham finished just eighth in the top flight.

His best return in English league football came in the 2021-22 campaign when he managed 23 goals and nine assists in 35 games and won the Golden Boot.

Son has been at Spurs since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for a reported £22million.

He has scored 148 goals in 378 games for the Londoners.
