Sources: Tottenham to spend big this summer – latest on defender deal

Tottenham are not likely to spend big money on a backup defender this summer amid widespread links with Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (15 February) that Spurs are confident they can raise the funds for big-money deals in the off-season.

A well-placed source has revealed that funds “won’t be an issue” for Tottenham.

Branthwaite, who has been widely linked with Ange Postecoglou’s side, is likely to cost huge money after his excellent Premier League breakthrough this season.

But sources say Spurs will struggle to justify a deal for the England Under-21 ace with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven performing so well.

Tottenham also signed Romania international defender Radu Dragusin for a reported initial fee of £21.5million in the January window.

It is believed the Lilywhites will look elsewhere in their squad for improvements when the transfer window opens again.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (12 February) that Postecoglou’s side are expected to sign a new marquee number nine this summer to replace departed legend Harry Kane.

Meanwhile, Man United boss Erik ten Hag and his recruitment staff have made Branthwaite a long-term target.

Everton Man United

Sources told Football Insider earlier this month (5 February) that United are in pole position to sign the Everton defender ahead of the summer window.

He has made 27 appearances across all competitions so far in the 2023-24 campaign and has been widely tipped for a senior England call-up.

In other news, Tottenham accelerate plans to sign “next Harry Kane”.
