Sources: Watford agree deal to beat Wolves to six-figure Pollock signing

Watford have beaten Wolves to the signing of Grimsby defender Mattie Pollock, Football Insider can reveal.

The Premier League new boys have had a bid of around £100,000 accepted by Grimsby for the 19-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Pollock has agreed a five-year deal at Vicarage Road.

The agreement is a blow to Wolves, who had made contact over a potential deal this summer.

Pollock had just one year left on his contract at Grimsby Town, having joined the club on a scholarship in 2018.

The centre-half made 29 appearances across all competitions for the Mariners in the 2020-21 campaign.

His development was one of few positives from a difficult campaign for Grimsby, who dropped out of the Football League after finishing bottom of League Two.

In total, Pollock made 57 appearances for Grimsby since his debut against Exeter City in December 2018.

Speaking about his ambitions in football in 2019, Pollock said: “My ultimate ambition is to be the best central defender in the world and play at the highest level I can.”

He is set to join a Watford side that bounced back to the Premier League at the first time of asking after finishing second in the Championship behind Norwich.

The teenager will become Watford’s second signing of the summer after Kwadwo Baah joined from Rochdale on a five-year deal earlier this month.

In other news, a Watford star is close to agreeing a new three-year contract at Vicarage Road after an impressive Championship campaign.
