Sources: Wayne Rooney to be sacked by Birmingham City after 15 matches
Birmingham City have decided to sack Wayne Rooney as manager, sources have told Football Insider.
The Man United legend’s 15-match reign at St Andrew’s is now set to come to an end after an appalling run of results.
Rooney, 38, has won just two of his games in charge of Birmingham since succeeding John Eustace in October.
Club chiefs have now decided they have no option but to sack the footballing icon with the Blues just six points above the Championship relegation zone.
He failed to win over the fans during his three-month reign and the travelling faithful called vocally for him to be sacked after the dismal 3-0 loss at Leeds on Monday (1 January).
As revealed by Football Insider in November, Rooney also raised eyebrows behind the scenes early in his reign after publicly slamming his players for their lack of fitness – before granting them six days off during the international break.
Birmingham and their American owners Shelby Companies Limited, who took over the club last July, will now begin the search for a new boss.
The Blues are just six points ahead of 22nd-place Sheffield Wednesday after 26 second-tier games.
Rooney took the job at St Andrew’s after leaving Major League Soccer outfit DC United – having won just 14 of his 53 matches in charge in the United States.
The ex-England international also oversaw Derby County’s relegation to League One at the end of the 2021-22 campaign – but the Rams’ financial situation and subsequent point deduction helped the 38-year-old preserve his good reputation.
Birmingham are next in action against Hull City in the FA Cup on Saturday (6 January) before their next Championship clash against Swansea on 13 January.
