Sources: West Ham open first talks to sign Steven Bergwijn, he’s ‘very keen’

West Ham are working on a deal to sign Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn and have held exploratory talks over a potential deal, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the Hammers are discussing both loan and permanent deals with the Dutch giants as they accelerate their plans to recruit a versatile attacker in January.

Sources have told Football Insider that Bergwijn is “very keen” on a return to the Premier League and is open to joining David Moyes’ outfit.

Negotiations are very early and a total agreement between the clubs is a long way off at this stage.

The 26-year-old moved from Tottenham to Ajax in the summer of 2022 for a reported £25.8million and has three and a half years remaining on his deal in Amsterdam.

His £26.7million move to Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven did not prove a success after he managed just eight goals and 10 assists across 83 appearances for the Lilywhites.

However, his move back to his homeland has been more fruitful with Bergwijn notching 24 goals and nine assists in 65 outings.

West Ham are eager for an attacker who can play in multiple positions and Bergwijn’s ability to play across the frontline as well as an attacking midfielder is appealing to the club’s hierarchy.

It comes amid doubts over the futures of the likes of Said Benrahma, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio.

Football Insider revealed (7 January) that the race for Benrahma could run right to the end of the January transfer window with Wolves, Fulham and Lyon all interested.
