Sources: Wigan Athletic and Barnsley race to sign Charlton Athletic star Terell Thomas

Wigan Athletic and Barnsley are monitoring Charlton Athletic defender Terell Thomas in this month’s transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Thomas, 28, is in the final six months of his contract at The Valley and the Addicks could potentially let him leave for free to trim their squad and make room for new signings.

The Saint Lucia international boasts a wealth of experience and has been a versatile option for Charlton since joining in 2022.

Thomas, who is primarily a left-sided centre-back, can play anywhere across the backline which makes him an attractive proposition for Wigan and Barnsley.

The London-born ace has made 23 appearances across all competitions this term, notching one assist.

He played 90 minutes in Charlton’s 2-1 loss against Peterborough on Saturday (13 January).

Thomas joined the Addicks on an initial one-year deal in 2022 after leaving Reading on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old extended that deal by a further 12 months last summer after making 18 appearances across all competitions in his first campaign at The Valley.

He is an experienced operator at League One level, making 124 appearances in the third tier in spells at Charlton, Crewe, AFC Wimbledon and Wigan.

Thomas had a previous spell with the Latics between 2017 and 2018 but made just eight appearances during his time at the DW Stadium.
