Sources: Wycombe, Wigan Athletic and MK Dons set sights on Swindon ace Payne
Wycombe Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and MK Dons are keeping tabs on Swindon Town star Jack Payne, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The League One promotion chasers are in the market for an attacking midfielder who can add creativity in the new year.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Payne has a free transfer clause in his contract which is active in January.
The midfielder has started all but one of Swindon’s league games this term with the Robins seeking to return to the third tier at the first time of asking.
Payne has netted nine goals in 22 games across all competitions for the Wiltshire club this season.
The 27-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season.
The Englishman started his career at Southend United.
He enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Essex club in League One during the 2015-16 season.
Payne netted nine goals in 35 games that term, earning him a move to Championship side Huddersfield Town.
The midfielder struggled to establish himself with the Terriers following their Premier League promotion and had a number of subsequent loan spells.
One such spell was a successful League One promotion campaign with Blackburn Rovers in the 2017-18 season.
A move to Lincoln City followed upon the expiry of his Huddersfield contract in 2019.
Payne then joined Swindon in August 2020 but was unable to prevent their relegation from League One.
However, the midfielder could soon return to the third tier.
Wigan Athletic, Wycombe and MK Dons are all currently chasing promotion to the Championship.
The sides sit second, third, and seventh in League One respectively.
The winter transfer window opens on 1 January.
