Southampton fans react on Twitter to European exit

By Emma Sanders

Southampton went crashing out of the Europa League following a 1-1 draw against Hapoel Beer Sheva on Thursday evening – and fans reacted on Twitter with frustration.

The Saints needed a victory or a goalless draw to progress through to the knock-out stages of the competition but produced an uninspiring display against the Israeli outfit.

Virgil Van Dijk continued to impress at centre-back and scored a late equaliser for Southampton in stoppage time but it proved too late for the Saints to mount a comeback.

Maor Bar Buzaglo’s 78th minute goal proved costly for Southampton and it was a mistake from Oriol Romeu on the edge of the area which gave away possession.

Southampton had a number of chances to score in the first half but weren’t clinical enough and they were left ruing what could have been at full-time.

Prior to their disappointing Europa League draw, Southampton suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

They were in bright form going into the Premier League fixture, recording a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup just days before, as well as producing a 1-0 win against Everton the previous Sunday.

However, a recent dip in form has become a concern for fans and they voiced their frustration on Twitter after the game.
