Exclusive: Paul Robinson names Liverpool man his POTY, just pips 27yo teammate
Paul Robinson says that he believes Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk should be named the Premier League player of the year this season.
The former Leeds and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, picked the Holland international narrowly ahead of 27-year-old goalkeeper Alisson.
There has been plenty of debate about which Reds ace could pick up the individual honour at the end of the season – Jurgen Klopp’s men dominating the top flight – with the likes of Darren Bent and Rio Ferdinand weighing in with their opinions.
However, after acknowledging there are several candidates worthy of mention, Robinson says it has got to be 28-year-old van Dijk after his transformational performances at the heart of the defence.
“You’re spoiled for choice, aren’t you?” Robinson told Football Insider.
“It could be any one of the front three – Mane and Firmino stand out – van Dijk, just for the pure impact that he’s had and from my position Alisson as well. I’ve not seen a goalkeeper have an impact on a side like that since Peter Schmeichel at Man United.

“Alisson and van Dijk have been so key to what Liverpool do, going forward they never had an issue, it was always defensive problems that they had.
“For me it would be either Alisson or van Dijk. (If you were forced to pick one?) Van Dijk.”
The Dutch powerhouse has played 34 times across all competitions already this season, featuring in every single minute of their Premier League campaign.
He has 106 appearances under his belt since his move to Anfield and won the PFA Player of the Year award last season.
In other Liverpool news, Robinson has made a bold claim about some “brilliant” starlets at Anfield.
