Sporting director who signed Matheus Cunha at Wolves lands new Premier League role

Wolves’ former sporting director, who signed a host of big names for the club, has started a new role at another Premier League club today.

Wolves are set to extend Vitor Pereira’s contract, but they will do so under a new sporting director, after the former holder of that position has joined a new Premier League club.

The Midlands club have had a poor start to the Premier League season, sitting bottom of the table with no points from their first four games.

Wolves head into a crucial early-season relegation clash with Leeds United on Saturday, as both teams aim for an important three points to stave off the drop.

Matt Hobbs lands Crystal Palace role

Alex Crook of talkSPORT has today revealed that Wolves’ former sporting director Matt Hobbs will begin a job in the same role at Crystal Palace.

Crook wrote on X, saying: “Matt Hobbs has now started work as #CPFC sporting director. Left Wolves in the summer after 10 years after overseeing the signings of the likes of João Gomes, Andre and Matheus Cunha.”

Crook continued: “Also helped ensure Cunha stayed in January and sold Max Kilman and Pedro Neto for big money.”

Hobbs will combine with Crystal Palace’s summer signing Christantus Uche, who joined the club on loan from Getafe.

Football Insider exclusively revealed that Uche was a target of Wolves in the summer transfer window, Hobbs’ former club.

Hobbs will take on a crucial role for Palace in a difficult time for the club, who could see many big assets depart next summer.

Adam Wharton is reportedly the target of Liverpool, amongst other clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Marc Guehi looks destined to join Liverpool on a free transfer next summer as well, with Jean Philippe Mateta also potentially set to leave Selhurst Park.

Perhaps the biggest possible departure, though, could be Oliver Glasner, who is in the running for a big job as Manchester United look set to sack Ruben Amorim.

Glasner is one of many candidates shortlisted by Man United to replace Amorim should he be sacked during the October international break.

If the worst-case scenario comes to fruition and all four major assets leave Palace, Hobbs will have his work cut in an attempt to replace them during his first summer at the club.
