It’s odd to think that of the few Celtic players who are set to go to the World Cup, one has been slated for poor performances, one has only featured once since October and they both play in the same position.
Yes, the careers of Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa seem bizarrely entwined, with neither featuring prominently in the eyes of Hoops supporters currently.
With Lustig set to be suspended for the Bhoys’ next league game, now would seem the right time for Gamboa to get a rare run in the side.
But there is no guarantee that the 28-year-old fringe player will replace Lustig as the right-back in the side, as Brendan Rodgers may prefer to choose 19-year-old Anthony Ralston.
Gamboa has only featured for the Hoops on three occasions this season, most recently in the drab goalless draw against St Johntone last month, where a shadow Hoops side – chosen because the Europa League trip to Zenit was on the horizon – failed to pull up any tress.
In all honesty Gamboa’s signing has been a poor one by Rodgers, who seemed to lose faith in the player signed from West Brom as soon as he saw him play.
He hasn’t been that bad in all honesty, but if he can’t get into the team now he never will, and she should probably leave Glasgow for pastures new in the summer.
In other Celtic news, the Hoops stadium manager is confident that the match against Morton will go ahead
