'Start talking about crazy signings' - Pundit reacts to huge Mike Ashley-Newcastle update

Darren Bent has urged the Premier League to make a decision on the Saudi-backed Newcastle United takeover bid as talk of a potential rival offer emerges.

The former Tottenham and Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he would understand if the bid was turned down on human rights grounds but insists officials cannot wait on a decision any longer.

Bloomberg report that American tycoon Henry Mauriss has already met Mike Ashley as he prepares to launch a rival bid, with the future of the Amanda Staveley-fronted offer still in the hands of the Premier League.

Bent insists that a decision on the current offer has got to made imminently for the good of the Magpies.

Bent told Football Insider: “When the news broke ages ago about apparently the takeover was imminent, I got excited like the rest – brilliant, start talking about crazy signings. Financially it looked like it could happen.

“Now you start thinking what’s the hold up, what’s the problem – I know there’s the whole human rights thing about Saudi Arabia which I totally get and if that’s the case then of course, you can’t allow that.

“Newcastle fans just want some good news, some stability – they thought they were going in one direction, everyone’s going to get excited if you hear your club’s close to a takeover with new owners with trillions of pounds, you look at what it’s done to Manchester City, Chelsea.

“All we can do is hope for the best but it’s been bubbling along for too long now and there needs to be a decision one way or the other.

“If the Premier League are going to say no, just say no because it takes time – when you acquire that amount of money, it takes time.”
