Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Steve Bruce after Newcastle United completed the “statement signing” of Callum Wilson from Bournemouth yesterday.

The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the 28-year-old was “very good value” at £20million and would address the issue of goals at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies confirmed the signing of Wilson on Monday morning after Football Insider revealed last Wednesday that the club were in pole position to sign the England international.

He put pen to paper on a four-year contract on Tyneside worth around £100,000-a-week.

Wilson has scored 41 goals in 126 Premier League appearances and despite eight of those coming last season it was not enough to save Bournemouth from relegation.

When asked by Football Insider if £20million was a fair price for the centre-forward, Robinson said: “That is very good value for him. Very good.

“He is a top striker and has done really well at Bournemouth and even fought his way into the England squad at times. I think he will do well.

“I like what Steve Bruce has done up there, the signings he has made, he is shaping the team after what was a decent season last year. That have had all of the unsettlement of a potential takeover and for him to get his head down and carry on… He deserves a lot of credit.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce

“Newcastle’s recruitment has been very clever. Jeff Hendrick from Burnley, he is a box-to-box midfielder and a class player.

“Callum Wilson will be a great addition in an area that they struggled in last season. They did not create much but they also did not take their chances. Wilson is a real statement signing for them. Steve Bruce knows that it was an area he needed to address.”
