Stefan Borson: Casemiro could agree ‘big’ Man United pay cut

Casemiro could be heading into his final few months at Manchester United after so far failing to agree a new contract at Old Trafford.

Man United have an option to extend Casemiro’s contract by another season before it runs out in June 2026.

Football Insider revealed on 26 October Man United will not trigger Casemiro’s contract extension, but they could offer him a new deal on reduced wages.

However, Ruben Amorim’s side could be in direct competition with Saudi Pro League clubs, who have been keeping a close eye on the 33-year-old midfielder’s situation at Old Trafford.

Casemiro could be offered ‘attractive’ deal

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Casemiro would have to accept a “big” wage cut to remain at Man United beyond this season.

Casemiro has been a regular starter in recent weeks, helping the Manchester giants turn things around on the pitch.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Casemiro extending his deal on reduced terms, Borson said:“Well, I think it’s possible because it obviously assumes quite a big number on the wage cut. It’s hard to have a view without knowing what United would have in mind.

“Look, the reality for Casemiro is that he would find himself in a position where he’s moving on a free transfer, and then it just becomes a case of whether he wants to go to Saudi Arabia or maybe the US.

“But I doubt he’s a US-type signing given his position and given his wage. So, his choices become a short-term European contract, probably on a similar salary to that which United would offer, reduced but still very attractive, or if Saudi Arabia are interested.”

Former Old Trafford chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Saudi clubs are ready to make Casemiro offers to move to the Middle East.

Man United to make Casemiro extension decision

Casemiro’s wages are the biggest issue for Man United, with the Brazil international believed to be on around £375,000 a week.

“If Saudi Arabia are not interested in the player, then he’s going to have no option but to take a lower salary and probably will look at it and go, ‘Well, I may as well stay’ if he’s going to play,” said Borson.

“He has just got himself back into the Brazil team. That could be interesting for him if he’s going to play for United and he is starting games.

“So, I think the only thing we know for sure is that United are not going to take him on an extended contract at the current salary level because if they take the option, I think they have to pay the current salary, and I think that’s pretty unlikely.”

Casemiro has started in seven of his eight appearances for Man United this season.
