Stefan Borson drops Leeds points deduction verdict after confirmed news

Leeds United could have breached the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) if they were promoted back to the Premier League last season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Leeds would have ended up having to pay £20million in player bonuses if they had achieved promotion and that could have led to them breaking the PSR rules.

The West Yorkshire club announced a loss of £33.7million in their latest 2022-23 accounts following a further loss of £34million in 2021-22.

Leeds’ relegation to the Championship in 2023 put them at risk of a financial breach before Daniel Farke’s side narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Premier League last season.

Under the PSR rules, the club will be allowed to lose a maximum of £61million over a three-year period ending in 2024-25.

Leeds United could have landed points deduction with promotion

Despite suffering the disappointment of failing to gain promotion back to the Premier League, Borson believes that could have saved Leeds from a potential points deduction next season.

He told Football Insider: “The one issue I thought Leeds could be facing was if they got promotion, perversely it could have triggered a PSR breach.

“They would have ended up with a £20million promotion bonus they would have needed to have paid to the players.

“That would have all gone into the 2023-24 accounts despite all the benefit being next year in the Premier League.

“They could have had this weird situation where they could have breached PSR if they got promotion.

“But because they haven’t got promotion and didn’t have to pay the bonuses, they might be okay.”
