Stefan Borson drops strong verdict after stunning £3bn Birmingham reveal

Birmingham City are a club firmly on the up after securing promotion back to the Championship.

Chris Davies’s side smashed records in League One after claiming 111 points in their title-winning campaign.

The Blues owners have ambitious plans to build a £3billion stadium as they look to take the club back to the Premier League.

Birmingham have purchased 60 acres of land in the east of the city to build a Sports Quarter, comprising a new 62,000-seater stadium, training facilities and more.

However, finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the numbers involved don’t seem realistic.

The government announced on 4 June a £2.4billion investment in the West Midlands that will go towards extending the metro to the Sports Quarter.

Birmingham have ‘smart’ chiefs leading stadium plans

Borson insisted Birmingham have smart people in charge at St Andrew’s despite his scepticism over their proposals.

He told Football Insider: “None of it seems realistic at all.

“But then some of these American owners do have very grand plans and models that show where they see their vision as to where it’s all going.

“I don’t see it. I think the indicators are that football has potentially at the moment hit a plateau in terms of value.

“I’m just not convinced that Birmingham can fund a stadium of £3billion. I don’t understand where the cash flow is coming from to support that kind of infrastructure in a two-club city with lots of other clubs around.

“Birmingham is not a small place, but it’s already got Villa and Birmingham with 25,000-30,000 fans.

“But what does a £3billion stadium look like? How does it wash its face?

“That doesn’t make sense to me, but these guys are smart. There is no question they’ve got really smart people around, so my scepticism is kind of irrelevant.

“But let’s see what happens. There is a lot of talk particularly around stadia all over the country.

“Let’s see what actually happens.”
