Stefan Borson shares verdict on Leeds conflict after West Ham deal agreed

Leeds United don’t need to worry about any conflict of interest after Red Bull recently signed up to sponsorship deals with Premier League clubs.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the deals are unlikely to receive much attention due to the low financial numbers involved.

Red Bull took a minority stake in Leeds in May this year, with its logo featuring on the front of the club’s shirts this season.

But West Ham announced on 19 September they have agreed a multi-year deal with the soft drink’s company to become their official energy drinks partner.

It comes after fellow Premier League sides Everton and Newcastle United have also signed up to similar deals with Red Bull in recent weeks.

Leeds ownership separate from Red Bull’s commercial deals

But Borson doesn’t expect there to be any issues for Leeds as sponsorship agreements can be separated from ownership deals.

He told Football Insider: “I think you can separate deals that are purely commercial deals from ownership deals.

“I think they are quite distinct. It’s hard to see how there would be a conflict in that.

“I suspect some of those partnership deals are going to be quite low numbers, so it’s hard to see how that creates a conflict.

“It will probably be worth £1million or less than that per annum.

“I think it’s not really a conflict and probably not one that’s going to get too much attention.

“We will have to see, but I would suspect not.”
