Stefan Borson drops verdict on whether Pep Guardiola is about to quit Man City

Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City remains a hot topic of debate as the business end of the season approaches.

Man City secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday (8 February), keeping them within six points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

There have been suggestions Guardiola could leave Man City at the end of this season, which is his 10th in charge of the club.

However, the decision lies solely with the Catalan boss, whose contract runs until June 2027 at the Etihad Stadium.

How Man City feel about Pep Guardiola’s immediate future

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider there are “little signs” this could be Guardiola’s final season at the Etihad.

There has been plenty of speculation in the media over the past few months suggesting the 55-year-old’s decade-long spell in Manchester could be coming to an end.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the reports around Guardiola’s future, Borson said: “Well, I don’t think it’s coming from City. To be honest, I don’t think City know either way. There is a possibility that Pep doesn’t know either way, to be honest. That has been the case in previous years.

“But clearly, there’s a general feeling within the game that his time is coming to an end. I think there are little signs, small little indicators that suggest that maybe this is the last season.

“But then, I know other people who are adamant that he will see out his contract. I think it’s unlikely that he’ll renew. I think we can all agree with that. But then again, I mean, even that, many times he’s renewed when it wasn’t expected.”

Why Guardiola could stay at Man City next season

Man City are still competing on four fronts this season, with Guardiola’s side set to take on Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final next month.

“I do slightly doubt that he would leave on the back of a disappointing season,” said Borson.

“I think if City sort of petered out between now and the of the season, then it’s not impossible. You could argue they’re on course for a quadruple, but I don’t think anybody sensible would think that that’s likely.

“They are in one final in the Carabao Cup. It’s probably close to a coin flip as to who wins the Carabao Cup. I think if they won something big, the league or the Champions League, then I think that the likelihood again increases that he leaves on a high.

“But if they were to go through a season where they don’t win anything at all, I absolutely could see him staying for another season.”

Man City’s next fixture sees them take on Fulham at the Etihad on Wednesday (11 February).
