Stefan Borson drops West Ham PSR update after source’s reveal

West Ham chiefs are under pressure heading into the summer transfer window following the club’s disappointing campaign.

The Hammers currently sit 17th in the Premier League table after losing 16 of their 34 matches this season.

However, they are under no threat of relegation after Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton’s immediate return to the Championship has already been confirmed.

Football Insider revealed on 14 April Graham Potter is now demanding to be heavily backed this summer as he looks to get the club moving in the right direction again.

There have been questions asked over whether that will be possible after West Ham Football reported on 28 April a club source has revealed the East Londoners will breach the Premier League’s financial rules unless they sell players this summer.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider he doesn’t believe the Hammers have a profit and sustainability (PSR) issue.

Under the PSR rules, top-flight clubs are permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

West Ham posted a record-breaking revenue last season after their turnover increased from £236.7million in 2022-23 to £269.8million, while they also managed to turn their previous £17.1million loss into a £57.2million net profit across the same period.

West Ham set for £25m hit in new blow

Borson revealed West Ham are likely to be around £25million down on their expected prize money, but that still won’t land them in PSR trouble this season.

He told Football Insider: “I don’t think it’s right, to be honest.

“It’s certainly not going to be ahead of the summer window unless they signal it by moving their year-end. Their year-end at the moment is the end of this month, it’s 31 May.

“That means that we know they don’t have a problem for 2024-25 because if they did, they would move their year-end to 30 June so that they have a chance to do some trading in June.

“Unless they move their year-end this month, that tells you that they don’t have any issue with 2024-25, so I don’t think that part of the story is true.

“It may be that they’re looking on one year, two years on and saying ‘Look, we can’t cope with seasons where we finish 16th or 17th. The budget depends on us finishing seventh or eighth, and maybe getting into Europe’.

“Maybe their cost base is set up that they’re going to get £20million from Europe and another £20million on top of what they got this season or will get this season from Premier League merit payments.

“Remember, it’s about £3million per place. I would think at the start of the season, their budget said they’ll finish eighth or ninth. They are going to finish seven or eight places below that.

“That’s the best part of £25million down on what they expected to be, so not only have they disappointed in various ways, but they’re going to be £25million down on their budget for the league place.

“But it doesn’t look like they have got a PSR problem.”
