Stefan Borson: Everton are being too ‘aggressive’ as latest deal agreed
Everton are being “aggressive” in the transfer market despite concerns they could face cash-flow issues later this year.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he would be telling the Merseyside giants to be more cautious with their spending if he was currently advising them.
Everton completed their fourth signing of the summer window on 30 July when they secured a £16.4million deal with Lyon for defender Jake O’Brien.
That signing followed the £15million deal for Iliman Ndiaye, the £9million capture of Tim Iroegbunam and the loan addition of Jesper Lindstrom.
Sean Dyche’s side moved to secure O’Brien’s signature despite concerns over the club’s finances following the collapse of The Friedkin Group’s takeover.
Everton told to be far more cautious in transfer dealings
Borson admitted he would expect Everton to be more conservative in the transfer market due to the financing issues they could face during the upcoming season.
“They are spending, but the costs are fairly modest, particularly on the initial fees,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The actual expenditure from a cash-flow perspective is pretty limited.
“It’s difficult being on the outside and not being close to the fine detail of where their cash position is and where the other buyers are.
“But I think in these sorts of situations, you would expect a level of conservatism with the dealings in the transfer market.
“Maybe they will say ‘We are being conservative, the players we are signing are relatively low value, £15-20million here and there, that’s not a big deal’.
“But it’s a club that’s running at a loss and also has clear issues in relation to solvency.

“I would say they are being a bit aggressive.
“If I was advising them right now, I would be looking to be quite cautious.
“But the board has a better visibility than I have and may take a different view on risk anyway.”
